ARTIST TRADING CARDS - featuring CATSLIFE PRESS STAMP

Here is this months offering for THE STAMPING QUEENs ATC Design Team.

For anyone unsure of what an Artist Trading Card (ATCs) is...

a quick overview...They are little artworks 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches in size

or 64mm x 89 mm for we folk who live in metric land. 

They are usually made in sets of three or five and given away or swapped with other artists for their cards.

Technically they cannot be sold but similar works of the same specifications can be made to be sold they are called ACEOs  ( Art Cards, Editions and Originals)

Usually I get scrapping people say "oh these are lovely...errr ummm...why?

Why did man land on the moon... swim some funky freezing channel,

climb Everest, think Tony Abbott should wear speedo's ...

FOR THE CHALLENGE???

For goodness sake...
WHY NOT!!! I say!

 

Actually..

 ATCs have been around...

 since cocky was an egg !!!

(translation... A VERY LONG TIME!)

Art cards or miniatures where the rage in the 16th century. They were mostly portraits and they were sold, not traded or given away. They were the first wallet "photos". Men would have nudes painted of their Mistresses on art cards (without their wives knowing)--usually by the same Artist that would do the big family portraits of their wives. Miniature Portraits would be used for exchange when rich people arranged marriages. In fact, this caused a big problem for poor Henry the Eighth, when the artist who painted his fourth wife, Anne of Cleves, took a little too much "artistic license". Poor Anne was not up to standard and Henry divorced her.

The French artists were the first to come up with advertisement on the art cards. It wasn't until the mid-1700's that the English picked up on the idea of using the Art cards for advertising. The Art Cards of Europe are slightly larger than ours as is their standard deck of playing cards is much larger than ours.

During the Impressionist Age artists traded art cards among themselves to study each other's style and techniques. They also traded or sold the art cards as necessary for supplies, food and lodging

In 1887 "baseball" cards started to appear. These early cards are now very rare and it is uncertain what they were made of. They were not mass produced. During the period 1902 - 1935 baseball was in its golden years. Cards during this time were usually sold with bubble gum, chewing tobacco and cracker jacks. As they were marketed with different size products, baseball cards were different sizes and it was not until the 1960s that the modern 2.5 x 3.5 size was standardized.

Today there is a resurgence of hand made art cards for sale and trade.

As you 'll soon guess I love using quotes on my ATC's.

Collecting them is kind of like a hobby inside a hobby! LOL

I will be sharing a few of my favourites every month along with

some recomendations for products, techniques and ideas you can use,

should you dare to take up the challenge and have a go at one yourself

but beware it is addictive!!!

This month THE STAMPING QUEEN have provided me with a Catslife Press rubber stamp featuring a Boy in cap filmstrip stamp. I got a little carried away and made a couple extras because it was just too hard to choose between the quotes. ;)  Some made me laugh but all of them made me smile especially for the fact I am a mother of three strapping lads 13 (oh nearly put 12 LOL), 9 and 7, and most especially as I read this past week was WEEK OF THE SON ! How amazing is that!
