the technique in focus.
A BIG THANKYOU
TO ROSY AND JO
for the great experience.
To see more of what I've done
and say hello in the friendly forum ... HERE
I still have three more layouts and an ATC half started or in my head
to create out of the "choc full O lovely" kit I was provided.
(gosh, I HATE BEING A SNAIL SCRAPPER!!!
Heres what I would like to
share with you guys....
I have been playing with transparency and acetate for a while now.
I enjoy it so much I thought I share it as my technique in focus.
Bellow I have included some pictures and a really bad film clip to show you all how I create these things (please forgive the clip its my first attempt...listen out for the volia at the end! LOL)
This is the layout I created from some of the acetate embellishments.
It features my gorgeous sister Suzanne and my nephews Zak and Sam.
PRODUCTS USED:
Bazzil cardstock, Prima "Animal Bash" collection Patterned papers, ACETATE/Heavy transparency, Cherryarte, Scrapbook king and Jenni bowlin rub ons, American crafts foam alphabet thickers, Carolee collection mini alphas, leather thonging, Dimentional magic, acrylic paints and Tim Holtz alcohol inks, black fine Artline,
eyelets and cotton wool .
HOW TO CREATE...THE SUN.
To create the sun embellishment I used:
*Heavy Acetate
*sissors
*a CD marker pen
*Tweezers
* a circle template of some kind.
First matter of business ...you'll need two hands, one to hold the acetate under the heat gun and the other to burn err umm I mean shape the acetate while its hot. So this is what I came up with:
Acetate looks a bit like transparency except its thicker, stiffer and softens more easily with heat.
There fore doesnt hold its original shape without assistance. If you want to use it and it not to buckle melt and warp when you heat it have it on a flat hard surface. That said I have discovered its great fun for pulling out of shape to make embellishments.
To create these embellishments I purchased an A3 sheet of acetate from my local art store.
Fist I used a Friskers circle template to draw two cicles a smaller one inside a large one, Then using a rule I drew crossecting lines to make the "Rays", Then cut the shape out.
Holding my acetate shape with tweezers and using a heat gun,
I then heated them till the acetate was soft and limp.
Then the acetate was easily manipulated into the position I wanted. I then hold onto that shape till the acetate cooled and resets into that new shape. When heating the acetate there are a few things to remember... It only takes a couple of seconds for the acetate to soften and become bendable.
You can see a slight change it the look and texture of the acetate when it’s ready to bend. It’s similar to the way you watch embossing powder change as it starts to melt. I haven’t managed to completely melt a piece or burn any so it must be reasonably easy to do.( remember my post about how I cook toast! LOL)
As I've explained, the acetate works in this way, you apply heat, it softens, you bend and hold it in that position. As it cools it sets the way you have bent it. Apply heat again and it softens and becomes a flat sheet again, which is great if you've made a mistake you just re heat and begin again.
It does make you have to plan your piece carefully take for e.g. "the sun" on this layout. Each straight piece of acetate was heated and twisted but I did have to be careful(and wasn’t a couple times) that as I worked on each ray I didn’t accidentally heat up the one next to it and ruin it. You can emboss on the acetate as you do it but not afterwards for that reason.
Don’t paint your piece before bending it either because the paint scorches and then smokes!!! LOL Alcohol inks can be used to paint pieces also if you want to keep what you have made translucent.
